William Robert Blow Sr.

William was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and was educated in the Los Angeles School District. William graduated from L.A. Jordan High School in Watts at the age of 16.

After high school he attended San Jose State University and then enlisted into the United States Army. William was a Private in the 100th Fighter Squad, a Tuskegee Airmen Squadron during World War II, one of the famous All-Black Squadrons of the 332nd Fighter Group. While serving in the military, he received several medals of honor.

Upon completing his service in the United States Army, and returning to Los Angeles County, he and his family moved to the city of Compton. William had an entrepreneurial spirit. He owned several businesses while raising his family and later worked for the city of Los Angeles for nearly 30 years before retiring.

William was a runner, and his all-time favorite sport was track and field. He’d travel with his family to watch meets all over California as well as watching on television the ones he couldn’t attend. In addition to following his favorite sport, William enjoyed attending church, grilling, amusement parks (for the roller coasters and family fun) and reading. He was a strong advocate for education and helping the youth and others to continue and fulfill their academic pursuits.

The William R. Blow Sr. Scholarship Fund is his dream, his legacy; an effort to leave this world with better academic opportunities and worldly possibilities of success for those in need than when he entered it.
